We woke early and decided it would be a good idea to get going early as Tehran was a long way away and if Tabriz was bad driving Tehran was going to be on a different level. We quickly visited the ruin of an old mosque which still has the marks in it from cannon fire when it was attacked and is currently being restored due to a collapse from an earthquake.
We filled our car with petrol on the way out and for the first time one of our jerry cans and approximately 45L of petrol came to just under $12.
Although we are effectively sat down for the majority of the day it is surprisingly tiering so stopped off for a spot of lunch in a traditional Iranian restaurant where you sit on the floor and everything, it got a bit interesting when we all took our shoes off but the food was lovely.
It was late into the evening the calamity struck, after a fill up of fuel Joe and i noticed what looked like fluid coming from the rear of the minor and after signalling them to pull over quickly established that it was fuel. They had somehow punctured there fuel tank.
The next hour can be summed up like this:
We emptied water bottles to try and collect as much fuel as possible
A local man who happened to be in the lay by with us who spoke no english made all of us cups of tea which was like a proper english tea and tasted immense
A woman who also spoke no english brought us all dried apricots to snack on.
Team rainbow dash who had to drive further on in order to turn around arrived and attempted to plug the hole with various methods
A third local man then got some whisky out for us. Iran is by law a dry country and although it is possible to get alcohol on the black market it is very illegal. He then offered us some sort of peach drink and suggested we drink the whisky quickly followed by this, i presume in iran this is some sort of tequila slammer.
The hole was quickly fixed and we then put a spare jerry can on the outside and ran a hose into the engine. This held all the way to Tehran and after a quick stroll around the town and a kebab eat we went to bed.
